Ozark Poetry Slam Presents The Cover Slam

Poetry SlamBy Michelle Miesse

On Oct. 15, Northwest Arkansas residents and visitors will have the opportunity to hear poetry written by writers and poets from all over the world. This poetry will be read by competitors in Ozark Poetry Slam’s annual Cover Slam, at The Phoenix on Dickson St., starting at 8 p.m.

One of the most anticipated events of the year for Ozark Poetry Slam, the Cover Slam is a perfect opportunity for folks who don’t wish to read their own poetry onstage, but would like to share their favorite or most influential poetry with others. Ozark Poetry Slam is a receptive, energetic poetry show that brings new life to poetry from all eras and ages.

The Cover Slam has been a mainstay in the OPS scene for years. Ozark Poetry Slam council member Doug Shields, on why he enjoys the Cover Slam, says, “I like to see poets paying tribute to what inspires them. You can see the admiration in the performances.”

Rules for the competition are as follows: Competitors must come prepared with two poems they have not authored, which must be 3 minutes, 10 seconds in length or shorter (points will be deducted after 3:10). The works can be of any topic or style and, unlike many poetry venues in the U.S., costumes are encouraged.

For attendees who would like a chance to read their own work, the open mic begins at 8 p.m. Open mic readers are allowed four minutes onstage to speak their heart. Topics range from personal to personified, political to anything in between.

Ozark Poetry Slam takes place every third Tuesday of the month at The Phoenix on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Ark. Admission is free and open to those 18 years or older. Donations are accepted.
