Become An Artist Of Artosphere
Walton Arts Center is seeking proposals from visual and performing artists as part of the 2014 Artosphere: Arkansas’ Arts & Nature Festival. The 2014 Artosphere Partner Grant program has a total of $20,000 to be awarded among 1-5 grant winners. The goal is to find work that supports the mission and theme of Artosphere, and engages the community. Deadline for submission is Nov. 1 at 11:59 p.m. The award announcement will be made on Dec. 1. Artosphere’s mission is to celebrate artists, influenced by nature, who inspire us to live more sustainable lives. Weatherization For Low-Income Families
Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council, Inc. (C-SCDC) has received federal funds to continue to operate the Weatherization Assistance Program, which provides energy savings measures to the homes of low-income Arkansans to make them more energy efficient, safe and healthy. C-SCDC, a private, nonprofit community action agency located in Fort Smith, continues to operate the program in Crawford and Sebastian counties and now will provide the service in the counties of Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington. Five other community action agencies operate the program in the rest of the 75 counties.
C-SCDC will be able to install the measures in a home, free of charge to those who meet income guidelines: $22,980 for an individual; $31,020, a family of two; $39,060, family of three; $47,100, family of four; $55,140, family of five; $63,180, family of six; $71,220, family of seven; and $79,260, family of eight.

Beaver Lake Photo Contest
Melissa Estes, 14, of Cave Springs, took First Place in the 4-H Division of the 2013 Beaver Lake Photo Contest. The contest was held for the fourth year in conjunction with the Eighth Annual Secchi Day on Beaver Lake and the Benton County Fair. Melissa is the daughter of Michael and Dana Estes. She has been competing in the contest for several years. Previously, she took Second Place in the 2011 competition and First Place in the 2012 competition. Melissa received recognition and a cash prize, and her photo was displayed at Prairie Creek Recreation Area on Aug. 17, during Secchi Day. Her photo is featured on the Beaver Water District’s Facebook page and will also be featured on the District’s website and in the Fall 2013 issue of the District’s quarterly newsletter, The Source. Public Library Gets Trashed
The award-winning documentary feature film Trashed will be screened from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 15, at the Fayetteville Public Library. This powerful documentary, narrated by Academy Award winning actor Jeremy Irons, explores the global waste crisis and the environmental and human costs of mankind’s excessive generation of and disposal of waste materials, and it reveals ways of addressing this challenging issue. In order to support the message of the film, this event will be as low-waste as possible. Refreshments will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own cups, popcorn bowls, and cloth napkins for the refreshments. The refreshments will be provided using waste reduction practices, including choosing items with recyclable packaging, composting any food waste, and avoiding single-use packaging such as plastic bags and plastic water bottles.
Eureka Springs Film Festival
The 2014 Eureka Springs Winter Film Fest will be held Jan. 23, 24 and 25 in the historic City Auditorium located at 36 S. Main Street. Set in the unique Ozark Mountain town, the Eureka Springs Winter Film Fest aspires to promote and encourage independent filmmakers of all ages and celebrates the art of film-making in the community and beyond. Independent films that inspire, enlighten and entertain are being sought after. Film categories are drama, comedy, documentary, art film and animation. The length of film can be from 5 to 30 minutes. Deadline for submissions is December 31. The entry fee is $25.00 and the film format is digital. Get Your Free Mulch
Due to an excess supply of mulch, Fayetteville residents may receive free mulch during the month of September during normal operating hours at the City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. in southeast Fayetteville.
The mulch will be given away for free until supplies are exhausted and may be acquired in truck-bed/trailer amounts or residents can bring their own containers or bags for loading. The mulch is made from ground-up trees and is great for weed suppression and moisture retention around plants. The mulch is made from trees collected through the City’s Yard-waste Program and trees dropped off at the Composting site.
