The Buffalo River in Arkansas was the first national river.

A Buffalo River Advocacy group is looking for poets, writers and photographers to submit their works for a competition to celebrate the river’s majesty.

The first of its kind, the Creative Writing and Photography Competition will be sponsored by the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance. The theme for the entries will be “The Buffalo River Country.”

All are invited to submit works of creative writing or photography to celebrate the 100th birthday of America’s National Parks, and the 44th birthday of the Buffalo National River.

An opening reception and show featuring submitted photography and readings of winning original works will be held at the Newton County Library on Friday evening, May 20 from 6-8 p.m.

There will be cash prizes awarded for the entries. First will receive $25.00 and $10.00 will be awarded to second and third. Entries will be judged for best portrayals of the unique features and character of the Buffalo River watershed. Creativity in approach to theme is encouraged.

As an example, the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance recommends checking out “The Rapping Ranger” at https://rapping-ranger.bandcamp.com/track/buffalo-nr-karst.

SUBMISSION RULES

Poetry or other works of creative writing are to be limited to two pages with double spaced, 12-point font only.

Photographs are to be printed to fit 8½ by 11-inch sheet or larger, with or without mats.

Submissions will need to be sent along with a $10 donation for the first entry, and it’s $5 for each additional entry.

Submissions must be postmarked by May 1 to: BRWA Buffalo River Country Competition P.O. Box 101, Jasper 72641.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage people to think about what it is they love about the beautiful Buffalo River, and any entry donations will go toward the work of the BRWA to protect the river.

The mission of the Buffalo River Watershed Alliance is to preserve and protect the scenic beauty and pristine water and air quality of the Buffalo National River for future generations through public outreach and education, advocacy and direct actions.
