PREAMBLE RAMBLE

Another of you awesome Eat It readers sent me an e-mail suggesting that I try The Green Submarine, and since I do everything you guys tell me to do, I dropped in for some lunch the other day. I shall refer to this fabulous reader as Omijosh, because his name was Pete. I kid; it was Josh.
I really can’t tell you how much I appreciate the restaurant suggestions. Not only do I get to try out some great grub, but I don’t have to try and figure out where to eat, and thinking as little as possible is something I like
to practice as much as possible.

Food for Thought

The folks at The Green Submarine have come up with a pretty impressive menu and one that makes deciding what to have a bit difficult. I settled on the Turkey Pesto sandwich which was loaded with turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, alfalfa sprouts and basil pesto. And when I say loaded, I mean loaded. The sandwich was huge and I think weighed more than a really fat baby. Seriously. The sandwiches at The Green Submarine are so big that from what I hear, other sandwich shops have a little bit of hoagie envy.
But, 20 pounds of ingredients between two pieces of bread don’t necessarily make for a good sandwich unless the ingredients tastes good, right? Well, guess what? The sandwich was great! The ingredients were as fresh as they could be without them having a garden in the restaurant. The pesto was perfect. It wasn’t overwhelming, but rather kind of crept up on you after your taste buds had sorted through the other flavors.
I also had a side of the cucumber salad which was a medley of cucumbers, tomatoes, purple onions in a vinaigrette dressing. The dressing was amazing. It wasn’t your typical oil and vinegar vinaigrette, it was very peppery and sweet and delicious.

The Sporkcast

(1-5 sporks)

Atmosphere: 3.2 sporks that are the color of the green, green grass of home.
The walls are green — very green — but I saw nary a submarine. What gives? I think patrons definitely need to start donating “green submarine” themed items. I did totally dig the fact that there was art from a local artist for sale on the wall. I think all local restaurants should display local art and play local music as much as possible. The place is tiny, though. There are only three tables and a short bar, but I’m betting their food tastes just as good at your house or office as they do in the café.
Food: 4.85 sporks that weigh 645 pounds.
Not only do they offer a great selection of sandwiches, but they also have a wraps, soups and salads. Their drink menu is pretty darn cool, too. They have all kinds of coffee drinks, and they have smoothies and flavored milk! More flavors than just chocolate, too.
Staff: 4.75 titanium sporks with tiny periscopes attached to the tines.
The gentleman who took my order was super, super nice, and I was even kind of a pain in the butt (I mean more than usual). I didn’t catch his name, but I really appreciate him not slapping me or poking me in the eye, which I’m sure he wanted to do.
Dollars spent: My ticket was around 6 beans for my sandwich and cuke salad. The large sandwiches run around 7-8 bucks.
Chance of returning: I have no doubt I’ll be back to The Green Submarine. Omijosh said that I’d like it and that it was fresh, and he was right on the money.
