Poetry, Pottery & Pies
Organizers of an upcoming event put their creative caps on when trying to come with a new twist for the event. The result is Poetry, Pottery & Pies, a fundraiser for Clayton Scott that will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Arsaga’s Crossover.
Scott, Fayetteville’s official Poet Laureate, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Money raised will help Scott with his medical bills.
Poetry, Pottery & Pies will feature a silent auction of donated pies and art pottery. Performers will include poet Brenda Moossy, Geoff Olesner playing music and reading original works, and slam poet Doug Shields. Scott also will read and perform.
Mayor Dan Coody proclaimed Scott Fayetteville’s Poet Laureate in 2007, at a special ceremony at GoodFolk. Scott holds a master’s degree in writing from Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. He’s a published poet and photographer. He will be presenting a one-man show entitled “Down in Littletown” in November at Dickson Theater. He is a Magna Cum Laude, honors graduate from Southwestern Oklahoma University with a bachelor’s degere in Education and a Language Arts Minor.
Scott taught school in Oklahoma before becoming a television producer for a nationally syndicated TV talk show. He also worked as a comedian for more than 20 years and for the past 25 years, Scott has served students in a variety of capacities including teacher, youth minister, pastor, student detention counselor, and now as an arts educator. Scott serves as a part of three Arkansas Arts Council programs: Arts on Tour, Arts in Education, and as a Fellow for the A+ School Network.
For more information, call Betsy Gross of OPWC at 313-7268. The Ozark Poets & Writers Collective, based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is a forum for creators who work in words. OPWC’s mission is to support and promote community involvement in Ozark literary arts; to encourage an appreciation of local writers by providing access to their work through readings, publications, workshops, and other events and activities as demand and need become evident; and to ensure that the experience of writing and reading remain a vital part of life in the Ozarks.
The suggested donation is $10 at the door. In addition, checks made out to Clayton Scott may be mailed to the Ozark Poets and Writers Collective (OPWC), P.O. Box 3717, Fayetteville, AR 72702.     By Amylou Wilson

The bikes are coming and so are the tunes
Bikes, Blues and BBQ hits Fayetteville next weekend, which means all the venues in town will be going strong (checkout next week’s Free Weekly for the lineup). In addition to the clubs, big name acts like the Allman Brothers Band and the Lee Boys will be in town for concerts at the Tyson Track Center. Bikes, Blues and BBQ officially opens on Wednesday, and things will continue to rev up through next weekend.
Although next week’s going to be a full one, club owners aren’t slacking off this week. This week’s highlights include two notable Tuesday night shows: the Conor Oberst at George’s and Italian singer songwriter Beppe Gambetta at GoodFolk.
On Friday night one of the newer bands in town, The Poggs will hold a CD release party at Froggy’s on Dickson Street. A little bit rock, a little bit pop and a little bit soul spells The Poggs. Vocalist Will Brand knows how to take a song and make it his own, which the band finesses into an A+ sound. Joining Brand in the band are Jim Goza (lead guitar), Tyler Jones (percussion) and Justus Moll (bass).
