In theory, Spring Cleaning is a brilliant idea!

Out with the old, in with the new, getting rid of the winter doldrums to welcome in a new, fresh palate of clothes and decor to hallmark the spring season.  For most of us, the idea turns sour a couple of hours into the process and all we have is a huge mess of clothes, dusty nicknacks and old magazines we don’t know what to do with.  Ever fall asleep in the middle of your closet during your spring cleaning???

While freshening up your home is a given, renewing your wardrobe can be empowering and money saving.  During my last closet make-over, I can not tell you haw many undiscovered treasures I became reunited with.  And by taking a few pieces to get updated (fix zippers, adjusted hems, replace buttons), you can save a ton of money that you may have otherwise wasted on MORE Clothes.
Stepford Spring Cleaning!!!  Run!>>>

If spring cleaning your home and closet is just too overwhelming or time consuming, you can take baby steps by freshening up your beauty wardrobe.  There is no better way to prepare for the warm months ahead by junking that dried up mascara and dirty foundation and treating yourself to some fresh, new, on-trend replacements. Cleaning out your makeup is a hygienic way to keep your look clean and fresh throughout the year, and definitely a healthy way to start the spring off right.

When to say goodbye…makeup

Concealer: Up to 12 months

Powder: 2 years

Cream & gel cleansers: 1 year

Pencil eye liner: 3 years

Eyeshadow: 3 years

Foundation: 1 year

Lip liner: 3 years

Lipstick: 2 years, but if it starts to smell, replace it.  This one strikes too close to home.  Just like my mother’s  Hummel collection, each lipstick purchase is tied to an emotional experience.  And because of all of these emotional purchases, I am on a self-imposed probation from buying lipstick or lipgloss until I use up some of the items I already have.  For shizzies and giggles, let’s see how long this lasts!

Mascara, the fastest of any to expire, will last no more than 3 months!  Definitely treat yourself to a freshy.  Luxe:  Estee Lauder Turbo Lash All Effects Mascara, $32.  This vibrating mascara uses a watch battery to get product extremely close to the lash line.  The Look for Less:  Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length, $8.95.  Like the name implies, this newest creation from Maybelline lengthens lashes and leaves a glamorous finish.

About ShaliniIn order your cosmetics lasting as long as possible, here’s a trick from Shalini Vadhera, Creator of Global Goddess Cosmetics.  “Use clean brushes, not fingers, for a healthy application. Brushes should be washed every 2-3 months in a mild detergent and laid flat to dry. If they begin to fray or split, replace them in order to ensure the smoothest application.”

Last minute tips to be have a picture perfect prom

By Sheryl Porter

OK… So, you’ve broken the bank on the perfect dress and shoes. Here are some cost saving and time saving tips to get you through what will be the time of your life, albeit a little stressful.

1> Plan Ahead. Figure out what type of make-up look you want, jewelry you want to wear, and how you want your hair to look.

2> Face Time. When planning your make-up look, go dramatic on eyes OR lips, but not BOTH. Also, apply your foundation last. Young skin doesn’t need much perfecting and you may be surprised how pretty your skin will look au natural.

<<< Katherine’s Bold Red Lip

Heidi’s Bold Eye>>>

3> Utilize Resources. Get with gal pals and have an informal swap meet exchanging jewelry, shoes, hair accessories and make-up. This can be a fun way to create a one-of-a-kind look and save some serious money. You can also have your make-up applied complimentary at your local cosmetics counter. Keep in mind, you will need to call ahead and be flexible with your time. Have fun with colors! Try a turquoise eye with a sheer coral lip, or a purple smokey eye with a glossy pink lip.

4> Dress Rehearsal. If you can, organize a practice run with hair, clothes and make-up.

5> Mix it up. Prom prep can get pretty stressful, create a mixed CD with your favorite tunes to get you in a party frame of mind. Think: Lady Gaga, All American Rejects, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears.

Stay Pretty, Prom Divas!!!!

Every cent of the selling price of Viva Glam Lipstick and Lipglass is donated to the MAC AIDS FUND.

By Sheryl Porter

If you ever looked at a fashion magazine within the last 14 years, you have probably stumbled upon an the eye catching ads for Viva Glam Lipstick from make-up giant MAC and read the words: “Every cent of the selling price of Viva Glam Lipstick and Lipglass is donated to the MAC AIDS FUND to support men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS.”

To date, the MAC Aids Fund has raised more than $135 Million and has supported 700 organizations in 60 countries. Lucky for us, the glam doesn’t stop there.

viva glam vi.png

A new Viva Glam VI Special Edition Collection has launched with a new lipstick ($14.00), a new lipglass ($14.00) and a new spokesmodel.

Pop sensation Fergie is lovely in lavender as the newest of a long line of Viva Glam spokesmodels. Fergie’s predecessors include drag icon RuPaul, supermodel Linda Evangelista, Baywatch babe Pam Anderson and burlesque star Dita von Teese among others.

“The lipglass is a soft-pink tinged mauve frost and the lipstick is a soft blue pink” says Lacy Haugewood, MAC Retail Manager at Dillard’s Northwest Arkansas Mall. “Both are very fresh and soft looking, perfect for freshening up your spring palette.”

The overall color story of the Viva Glam 6 SE launch is a range of purples from lavender to royal, all very luxe, lush and flattering.

The lipglass coordinates especially well with the ever-popular smoky eyes in shades of blues, grays and of course deep purples. It gives just enough color to complete a look without overpowering the eyes or washing out the lip. Act fast as this collection won’t be around forever.

So who says beauty is only skin deep?

You can find MAC cosmetics and Viva Glam at Dillard’s Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville, Dillard’s Pinnacle Hills Promenade in Rogers or on the web at www.maccosmetics.com

‘Stay Pretty’ with two go-with-anything make-up looks you can recreate

By Sheryl Porter

If you were unable to attend the ‘Stay Pretty’ event at Dillard’s Northwest Arkansas Mall on March 10th, you really missed out. We had a blast going over tricks and trends every woman needs to know to become her own make-up artist

The first class taught guests how to create a 1940′s inspired look. Think 40′s pin-up girl with a modern twist. Ashley Ketz, KFSN Channel 5 Morning Anchor, was the perfect model for this look. You are probably used to seeing Ashley very fresh faced, very ‘girl next door’. We really turned up the drama dial and transformed Ashley into a sultry starlet.

sheryl-porter-051

To achieve this look, focus on:

Matte Eye shadows in very neutral shades like eggshell, taupe and chocolate.

Black Eyeliner ‘winged’ at the outer corners using an angled eye lining brush.

False Eyelashes in a side swept style. (We used MAC Half Lashes #20)

Lip Service: In order to have a perfect red lip 1> Line your lips with a true red lip liner. 2> Fill the lips with a true red lipstick with a matte finish. 3> Line the lips again 4>Top off the look with a BRIGHT orange lip gloss

sheryl-porter-03

Our second class focused on the number one requested eye look at make-up counters everywhere: The smokey eye look. Smokey eyes don’t always mean using black eyeshadow. Make this look your own by making a sooty eye in navy blue, deep plum, grey or forest green. For this demo, we used a navy blue smokey eye that can be paired with virtually any lip look.

To achieve this look focus on:

Create a full, well-groomed brow to balance this strong eye.

Use eyeshadow shades with a slight shimmer to allow for easy blending.

Apply foundation, concealer and powder AFTER apply eye make-up to clean up any eyeshadow ‘fall-out’ (IE-those nasty little crumbles that fall on your cheek.

Take your time… this is not a look to try out when you have one foot out the door.

sheryl-porter-011

Based on the response we had for this event, we will definitely bring it back with even more make-up looks and tricks of the trade. Have fun trying these two out.

And a special congratulations to Jessica Beil, winner of the ‘Stay Pretty’ V.I.P. contest.

Bikini Island

I had the craziest dream… I was trying on swimsuits and I actually looked good wearing them!?! I remember in the dream I tried on three bikinis in black, white and orange. I looked slammin’ in all of them! That is a dream indeed!!! Even though my recent personal weight loss has me looking (and feeling) good, I am NOT ready to walk down the green mile to anything related to swimsuits. That means no swimsuit buying, trying or styling.

So Freaking Hot

I totally looked like this…. in the dream. Love that Bar Rafaeli!!!

Friday is the official start of spring and many got the party started early by partaking in the annual college pilgrimage known as Spring Break. So, just throwing on that Ed Hardy bikini is not enough to be beach body ready. If the winter dull drums have left your skin dry, flaky and pale… just follow these simple tips:

Exfoliate: By using an exfoliating cream in the shower you can wash away all the old, dead skin. Look for exfoliators that also have AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids), BHA (beta hydroxy acids) or anything labeled ‘fruit acids’ to speed up the exfoliation process. Pay special attention to elbows, knees and feet.

Delicious Self-Tanning Cream

Tanning: Self tanners are so much better than they were 10 or 20 years ago (do you remember ‘QT’? I do!) If you are worried about streaks, look for a tinted self tanner. The bronzey tint will give you immediate color and act as a guide to insure you have applied correctly. Pro Tip: Apply self tanner to just cleaned, towel dried skin for best results. Also, don’t forget to wash your hands (in between your fingers too)!!! My Top Pick is Clarins Delicious Self Tanning Creme. As the name implies, the is a yummy souffle that hydrates while it tans. And forget that icky smell associated with many self tanners. I swear, you will be tempted to eat this… but don’t.

Hair Removal: This can be a delicate topic, but there is nothing hot about unkept bikini area. Shaving is fast and painless, but can leave redness, rash or ingrown hairs. My recommendation is to head to the spa for a professional waxing treatment or try a DIY home hair removal device. The NO!NO! Hair Removal System works great on just about any area of the body and is totally pain free. NO!NO! uses heat wave technology to remove hair and lessen regrowth by up to 64%.

OPI’s South Beach Collection

Feet: All winter long your tootsies have been bundled up in Uggs. Since open toe-shoes are synonymous with springtime a spring pedicure is a must. If you are on a budget, do your very best (skip some Starbucks runs if you must!) to get a professional pedicure at the beginning of the season and do your own maintenance throughout the season. OPI’s South Beach Collection offers a wide range of plums, bronzes and corals that will give any feet Spring Fever. My top choice is: “Paint My Moji-toes Red”. When I got my much needed pedi last weekend, the entire salon was abuzz about that shade. OPI Nail color is pretty easy to find. If your nail tech doesn’t use OPI, you can find it at Trade Secret, Looks Unlimited in Fayetteville and Regis.

Have you heard about the new breakfast menu at Denny’s?

Everywhere you turn everyone is talking about Nadya Suleman, Octo-Mom.  EVERYONE has an opinion on it and the media has weighed in on the speculation.  Will she keep the kids?  Will they be put up for adoption? Is her home safe to raise 14 kids? Is she mentally capable of raising that many kids? And, who is going to pay for their upbringing?

Nadya Suleman Angelina Jolie, Pictures: Octumom Nadya Suleman Creeps Out Angelina Jolie ”One of these things is NOT like the other”

From the beginning, comparisons have been made and speculation brewed that Suleman is striving to look like actress and mega star Angelina Jolie.  Can you actually blame her?  Jolie is a beautiful woman and her looks are many women’s perfect aesthetic.  But, its creepy how far Suleman, who is clearly unstable, will go to change her looks whether it is to mimic Jolie or not.  I look at faces everyday. It’s my job and a hobby.  The best plastic surgery are the nips and tucks that go unnoticed.  So did Nadya Suleman have plastic surgery???  Hell-to-the-yeah she did!   She had months to prepare for her huge media debut, and here is my opinion of Suleman’s plastic surgery smorgasbord:

sulemanbeforeafter  “Who’s your Mamma?”

Nose: Obvious Rhinoplasty (ie-nose job) going on here.  You don’t have to be a surgeon to figure that out.  Suleman’s nose is noticeably thinner and the tip is refined.

Lips:  It’s a shame that Nadya has fillers injected into her lips, because her lips actually look nice and full in the ‘before’ picture.  Perhaps her fertility doctor gave her the physician recommendation… two doctors that subscribe to the ‘more is more’ philosophy.  Note to her doctors… when it come to fertility and cosmetic procedures ”LESS is MORE”

Forehead: Evidence of  Botox… plausible.  This one is not as clear cut as the other procedures.  In both photos Nadya’s forehead is smooth.  If she is victim to the Botox needle, I grant her a mulligan.  I don’t really count Botox against her… everyone is getting it on their lunch break anyway.

Eyes: Fact…  Your face does thin out as your get older giving is a bonier look, especially around the eyes. (reference:  see Sharon Stone through the years) Bottom line, I truly believe the  Octo-Mom got the fat sucked out of her eyelids.  Although the date of the ‘before’  picture is unknown, this type of thinning of the eyelids would occur over many, many years of age… not just a couple.

Face: I am *convinced* Nadya Suleman has had some injectable filler to soften her ‘marionette lines’ (also known as nasolabial folds) around her mouth and I am soooo jealous.  Hyaluronic Acid is the filler of choice and am dying to try some of that myself.  However, I have a job and would pay for it in cash.  The big, Big, BIG question is… how did Nadya Suleman pay for all of these cosmetic procedures?!?    Well, just refer back to the question at the top of the blog….

Answer: Eight eggs, no sausage and the guy next to you have to pay for it!

So how does one become qualified to write a beauty column and advise others?  I hate to break this to you, but there is not a certification process or a school one must attend.  All it takes is a passion for the industry, a love for making people look and feel their best, a dash of talent and lots of practice.  How much practice?  Well, I guess I technically got my start in the business in 1997.  But I really got my start at a tender young age by putting together outfits and applying makeup to friends, family, neighbors, anybody who would sit still long enough to be my model… even a little brother once.

sheryl-circa-1986I remember when this circa 1986 photo was taken.  I was in the fifth or sixth grade, just went to see my first concert, New Edition, and feeling pretty good about myself despite the fact that I was in desperate need for an orthodontist.  Cyndi Lauper was my absolute idol!!!  Her multi-colored hair, avant garde makeup, Salvation Army clothes, that high pitched crazy voice… an 80’s icon indeed.  While most little girls experimented with their Barbie dolls and stuffed animals, I used my own face as a science laboratory.   In the early experiments, I tried everything! Even sneaking into the bathroom one night and attempting to create my very own longwearing lipstick.  My recipe was a precise mixture of Revlon nail polish and Bonne Bell lip-gloss.  All it created was a burning mess on my mouth!!!  Another failed attempt was the time I used a Sharpie as eyeliner.  I do not recommend either of these techniques.  Along the way, I have learned many beauty and style lessons that I will to share with you in this monthly column and answer your questions along the way. But, one thing that has not changed is that I still use my own face as a science lab (thank goodness I grew into those chipmunk cheeks)!

On Tuesday, March 10th I will be hosting two beauty classes at Dillard’s Northwest Arkansas Mall.  The first class is at noon and attendees will learn how to create a ‘40′s inspired look with a modern twist with lots of fun tricks and techniques thrown in.  Think Lauren Bacall meets Victoria Beckham!  If you are looking to learn more advanced artistry techniques, join us at 3:00.

At this class you will master an unconventional smoky eye and learn advanced artistry techniques.  This class is a must for the true beauty diva!  Both classes will demonstrate step-by-step technique and you will go home with a tear sheet of your look.

Seating is limited, so call Dillard’s at 479.521.7171 to reserve your spot at the class of your choice.  I look forward to seeing you there.  Until then…

look_2“Hello Gorgeous!”

by Sheryl Porter

Where does one begin a beauty blog?  I have to laugh when people underestimate to power of beauty products… “oh, it’s just lipstick”  Yep, that’s right… lipstick.  Lipstick and face cream and perfume,  just to name a few products that create a multi-billion dollar industry.  We really don’t NEED any of these potions, lotions and sprays, but we just can’t seem to live with out them. In fact, in years of economic decline, the sales of ‘just lipstick’ increase. Thousands of years ago, beauty products were used to create a message…. distingush people of a certain class, region, profession, age group.  Today, it is just as an emotional experience (if not more) as it is physical enhancement.  I find this aspect of the beauty world the most interesting.  Especially when you consider the origins of what a physical ideal was.  In Roman times, emotion did not  play a part in considering ones phyiscal attractiveness.  One was considered beautiful based on mathmatics and symmetry.  BORING!  Obviously the Greeks did not subscribe to the thought of “Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder”.  The Romans are a tough crowd… just as tough as any of our modern day ‘worst dressed’ lists.  Some of today’s most exquisite faces may be outcast based on this theory.  I’m curious to know how beauties like Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaug-hottie-hey and Brad Pitt would fare in Rome circa um, I don’t know, let’s say 1000 BC?  I did see the theatrical trailers for TROY, Brad Pitt  could supercede mathematical logic.  Fast forward to today. Sure, media sets us up to unrealistic ideals.  Airbrushing and Photoshop can forgive a myriad of sins… but we buy it.  I’m even going to go out on a limb and suggest we want it that way.   If I wanted to see untouched photos (ie-real people), I would just go to the mall, grocery store, family reunion, or just look in the mirror.  I want to look like the girl in the magazine (of course I never will… I know this) and will do what I can within my means and morals to get it.  So, let’s get back to that tube of lipstick, that face cream, that perfume.  Sure using those items will make me look a little nicer, firmer, younger but it makes me feel good.  And by the looks of my make-up collection… I feel great.  I hope you do too!
