OK, maybe it’s because I am a child of the ’80s and a gargantuan fanatic of the movie “Flashdance,” but I tend to stay true to my roots and call upon my fondness of fuzzy knit leg warmers as the chill in the air hits new lows. What better way to cover up and show off a great pair of gams when it is below freezing outside? You can wear them tall or scrunch them short. You can pull them over heels, flats and boots alike, and layer them with tights when a night on the town calls for the shortest of skirts.
Sure, it is a trend, but one that has been around since the New York City ballet companies made them a mainstay in the early 1970s. I like to think of them as socks for the wickedly in-style and wear my warmers whenever I feel like I may break into song and dance and bust out a few of my famous high kicks — yeah, I still got it, and thank “A Chorus Line” for reminding me my fun fetish with leg warmers will likely never go out of style — until I hit my 40s, I suppose.

By Blair Jackson

It is 4 p.m. at Tangerine, in the middle of registration for the Miss Gay Northwest Arkansas pageant, and I am (technically) the only girl in the room. A contestant with glossy caramel hair named Makiya Devoire and her stylist, Coco, are standing at the bar, waiting for the interview portion. Makiya is wearing a short, black cocktail dress and Coco is wearing black sequined leggings and knee-high boots. “This is the worst part,” Makiya says, as she waits for the judges to call her back.

When they finally do call her name, Coco, who is also Miss Gay Fort Smith, grabs a

brush and smoothes a few flyaways from Makiya’s hair. We wish her luck and she disappears into the hallway.

I am waiting for pageant administrator and Miss Gay United States, Fayetteville resident Jeremy

Courtesy Photo: Taylor Madison Monroe weeps with joy as she is crowned Miss Gay United States

Stuthard, who, I am told will be about half an hour. Jeremy is better known in the pageant and drag circuit as Taylor Madison Monroe. Over the years, I have seen Jeremy perform at Dickson Street Theater, but I remember him as a tall blonde woman.

In the lowlight of the bar, I don’t recognize Jeremy as his female counterpart. Sporting a five o’clock shadow, a charcoal oxford and a pair of black pants, the only flash of Taylor I see is when he playfully throws a blonde wig on his head. I introduce myself, and, after removing his wig, he shakes my hand.

Along with what seems to be his entourage, I follow him into the dressing room. Here, the lighting is better, and when he sits to pose for a photo, I am reminded of Audrey Hepburn in “My Fair Lady,” He carries himself with the posture and composure of a woman who has been trained to carry a crown. And by the look of the enormous

crown on his dressing table, good posture is a demand of the title and a necessity when balancing a colossal wig and 4 pounds of jewels.

Staff Photo by Blair Jackson: Jeremy Stuthard at his dressing table pre-transformation.

During the day, Jeremy works at Dillard’s in Fayetteville in the women’s shoe department. “I’m blessed with my job,” he says. “I love the people I work with, and the people I work for.” Jeremy says his supervisors are accommodating his schedule demands this year because they understand the title of Miss Gay United States is “a once in a lifetime offer.” The title requires Taylor Madison Monroe to serve as the administrator of each preliminary pageant leading up to the national competition, which means traveling to each state (and Puerto Rico) and all of the city preliminaries as well.

Jeremy’s phone rings, and he excuses himself to answer it. “That was my mother,” he says after hanging up. He tells me about her, his “No. 1 fan,” who drove to Ronoke, Va., to be attend at the Miss Gay United States pageant. He admits that, even though it sounds cheesy, winning the national title in front of his mother has been the proudest moment of his life so far.

“When they announced me as the winner, my mom started bawling. I picked her up and spun her around and said ‘We did it,’ and it’s true. If it wasn’t for her love and support, I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Courtesy Photo: Jeremy Stuthard spent his first night in drag as Medusa for a Halloween costume.

Taylor Madison Monroe was born eight years ago on Halloween night when Jeremy donned a black dress and hit the streets as a woman for the first time.

“It started on Halloween, then turned into a full-time gig,” says Jeremy. “I had a straight girl do my makeup that night.”

I glance at my own makeup in the mirror, and Jeremy jumps to reassure me, saying, “It’s not that straight girls can’t do makeup, but drag makeup is different.”

And it is.

Later in the evening, I sit behind Jeremy as he applies his makeup. He angles a flat edge diagonally across his cheek and brushes blush across it, leaving behind a sharp line of rouge and the illusion of high cheekbones. In a few steady strokes, he pencils two arches, an inch or so above his natural brow line, to create defined, feminine eyebrows. He applies a light base under his eyes and on the bridge of his nose, to catch the light of the spotlights; and he applies a blush to the edges of his temples, forehead, jawline and nose to create contrast.

Incorporating a blend of theatrics, comedy and glamour, and with the novelty of a “dude in a dress,” the experience of a drag show or pageant is a celebration of femininity and personality. To Jeremy, it’s an outlet for creative expression. “The ability to take a decent looking guy and turn him into a statuesque, beautiful women — all of the duct tape, hair and pantyhose that it takes — is an art form that I love,” he says.

I ask him how they use duct tape, and he clears his throat before answering, “Penises, fat and boobs.” Backstage with 10 other queens (some with crowns and some without), waistlines are formed by wrapping duct tape around the torso. Faux cleavage is created by taping the skin across pectoralis muscles to bring any excess skin together.

There are other tricks too.

Jeremy turns to me and sweeps rouge around the curves of my chest. “See, look how that enhances your breasts,” he says. I stand and look in the mirror. He’s right.

Trading secrets and tips is part of the backstage atmosphere at the pageant. The girls are swapping wig glue and hairspray, offering words of encouragement (and a few catty zingers here and there). Some personalities are bigger than others. Some makeup is brighter. Some hair is bigger. Some outfits are more glamorous. But there seems to be a mutual respect and appreciation for each individual’s personality and image.

“What’s the difference between Taylor and Jeremy?” I ask.

“There’s no difference,” Taylor says. A few of the other girls overhear and begin chiming in, and Taylor rethinks her statement. “Well, Taylor’s a little more bold. She’s a little more ballsy.”
We both laugh at the irony.

Jeremy’s transformation in the mirror, which now happens in about two hours, has been eight years in the making.

After acquiring a drag name (compliments of three former presidents), Taylor Madison Monroe began performing at the nightclub Wild On — back when Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard was still Sixth Street.

“I was a mess,” says Taylor of her early days. “Female impersonation comes with experience. The more you learn, the better you get.”

Taylor Madison Monroe brings sass and class to the United States gay pageant circuit.

Even as a self-proclaimed “mess,” Taylor was hot enough to get a gig at Dickson Street theatre as a show director, providing spectators with an experience that still draws crowds in the hundreds on Sunday nights and has become a staple of Dickson Street night life.

Taylor’s journey as a beauty queen began in 2004 with the Miss Up and Coming Pageant, in which she placed dead last. The loss inspired Taylor to focus on the art of a female impersonator.

It took eight months of constant practice but after eleven pageants, Taylor won her first title as Miss Tulsa USA. “It wasn’t that I was crown hungry, but I was learning and growing,” says Taylor.

“Each pageant helps me grow as an entertainer because of those judges,” she says.
In those early years, Jeremy was addicted to methamphetamines. He always had his car packed with pageant necessities and would drive all night to shows. “I was doing five shows a week at that time,” he said.

I ask him if he thought the methamphetamines gave him a competitive edge, “No,” is his firm answer.

“I believe it was my downfall in my competition … because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind. There was no mental awareness or capacity for anything. I was just go,go,go.”

After four years of addiction, he quit cold turkey, relying only on the support of his friends and family to achieve sobriety. “It’s still hard to watch shows like ‘Intervention,’” he says. “You get chills in your bones watching someone smoke a pipe. But that’s not who I wanted to be.”

He says that drugs are still prevalent in the national drag pageant circuit, and that it was once a major part of drag culture across the state.

Those like Taylor who have recovered from substance abuse are transforming the pageant circuit of Northwest Arkansas into a more socially responsible, more professional network by aligning themselves with the NWA Center for Equality and working to be role models.

Sitting in the crowd, before the pageant, I meet A.J. Hattabaugh, Mr. Gay Fayetteville. “I thank Taylor so much,” he says. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. She introduced me to the pageant circuit.” A.J. says the pageants offer an empowering experience of exposure and prominence in the gay community.

Arkansas is currently the only state that offers city preliminaries as a precursor to regional and state pageants; and Jeremy says the recent success the state has had on the national circuit gives him hope, not only for a stronger LGBT community, but also for a strong network of female impersonators and male entertainers.

“Arkansas has a history of not producing (winners at nationals), but this year we took home two national titles in one weekend.” The second title Jeremy refers to is a nod to the male performer Braxton, who won Mr. Gay United States.

On stage, Taylor is a sassy, playful, gorgeous woman with a hooting laugh that is contagious and easy-going. ”I’m very content with the person I’ve become, but I am always learning new things and moving on to bigger and better things,” says Miss Gay United States in her dressing room.

As for life beyond female impersonation, Jeremy says he dreams of opening a nightclub called “The Three Dead Presidents,” (a tip of the hat to the Taylor Madison Monroe legacy) that would offer an experience for every lifestyle and taste in music. Retirement, however, is nowhere on the horizon. “I plan on retiring when it doesn’t become fun anymore. There’s no timetable for it.”

Though the pageants are a powerful social tool for empowering individuals in the gay community, the

Staff Photo by Blair Jackson: Makiya Devoire poses in her "Rock Star" outfit.

essential element of the shows remains to be the entertainment value. “Dudes in makeup in dresses.”

Makiya Devoire applies her makeup before the show.

But Taylor and the other commentators offer more than a spectacle of the stage. The banter and quick wit of each lady brings a brazen comedic element to the experience. Double entendres, raunchy outbursts, bitchy backbiting and genuine camaraderie create an improvisational masterpiece of edgy adult entertainment. It is a performance that attracts crowds of mixed backgrounds, and even if only for a few hours, these “dudes in dresses” steal the spotlight and bridge the gap between traditional and alternative lifestyles with comedy, grace and blatant sexuality.

Five Girls: One Cardigan

Five fashionable females from the fabulous town of Fayetteville show us different ways to play up a gray, vintage “Ward Cleaver” cardigan. Something you may find in your grandpa’s closet, this cozy, comforting, thin outer layer is the perfect layering piece for fall. Yeah, it is still hot as Hades outside, but slowly we will find ourselves looking to the coat closet for something warm as we bundle together for body heat at football games. Get a leg up on the bite of October by stocking up now on these effortless and multi-functional pieces by hitting local thrift stores, (think: Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc.), or of course, your Grandfather’s closet.

1. Blair Koons: 24

A Fayetteville native who keeps it funky and the kiddos safe at the Starlight Skatium on College Avenue, leads a double life as a completely badass rough and tumble Roller Derby chick. Yeah, she skates with the best of them, all 5’ 3” of her, but this tiny lady can pack a punch and looks re

ally cute when doing it. Known for her sense of style on the rink, Blair keeps her style young by playing up her glorious, God-given “ass”ets. Short shorts worn-in just right and cut like a modest pair of undies (complete with holes, mind you) topped with a fitted bustier, help to play up some of Blair’s most fabulous qualities, she is beautiful AND she could care less about what you think. God, I think I love her.

2. Julie Blood, 19

Ms. Blood is a college student who juggles a managing gig at Plato’s Closet on the north side of Fayetteville, all while looking sleek on a daily basis. What I admire about Julie is that she is as beautiful inside as she is out. An old soul who is mature and wise beyond her years, young Julie pairs her gray cardi with a sheer polka dot blouse and skinny, inky dark jeans, making her a standout in class, and ready for her job as a professional, fashion savvy productive member of society. Double score! A charm necklace and menswear watch completes the look while Ms. B stays hip, fresh, AND work appropriate. Who knew that was possible?

3. Shandala Smith, 31

This spunky mother felt it a necessity to get started early supporting her Hogs. Shandala was a Razorback cheerleader when she attended the University of Arkansas in the late ’90s, and now spends her days running the family business, Pinnacle Auto Detail, with hubby and partner, Dereck. Her style is always changing, as Shandala is somewhat a chameleon of style, and she always looks daring and different from day to day. Shan’s luxurious mane of curls is always an obvious show stopper, and today, Mrs. Smith prefers a casual T and shorts combo with a tough pair of Frye boots. Ready for a day at work, a play date with the girls, and a Razorback tailgater all in one fail swoop. You go, girrrl.

4. Amanda Johnson, 22

Long-legged red strawberry-haired, Amanda Elias was married only a couple of weeks before this shoot. Now a proud wife fresh from a trip to the Bahamas, young miss Amanda spends her days as that eye-catching barista making your gourmet coffee treats at Arsaga’s off Crossover in Fayetteville. A senior kineseology major at The University, her style is casually simple. A busy lady who is also an aspiring model, enjoys mixing fall and summer pieces by adding tough boots to high-waisted shorts. An immensely versatile combo for a long to-do list and a beautiful woman on a mission. Go, Amanda, go!

Apparently, Lisa Brence Mendenhall got the “Cool Chick” memo too, and makes an effort to sport her pair whenever the moment hits. This professional lady, who is the executive producer for KNWA Fox 24, is covered in some amazing body art and uses it as an everlasting accessory. Pale faced and raven locked, Miss Mendenhall has a rock-n-roll sense of fashion and wears her granddaddy cardigan with a read leather, waist-cinching belt and black booties. In an outfit of black, gray, and white, Lisa lets the cherry red pop and draw the eye in to her teeny tiny waist. Dear Lisa, I will attempt, and fail famously, at being even half as cool as you.

Fall Fashion Preview

Photos, styling, and writing: Emily V. Smith

Models: Julie Blood and Blair Koons, both of Fayetteville

Believe it or not, the fall season is fast approaching. It’s hard to envision the turning of the leaves and the brisk mornings of October as sweat drips from every crevice in the dead heat of summer, but, alas, it will soon once again be time to break out the cold weather gear and make our best attempt at conquering fall’s biggest fashion trends.

In the spirit of keeping things simple, I have compiled a list of trends, ideas and closet staples for fall 2011, albeit the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the plethora of information available both online and in the glossy magazines, I hope it will be a starting point for some readers to think outside the box and try something new this year.

No. 1: Monochromotic Brights

(On Trend)

No. 1: Monochromatic Brights

What adult can look back on their childhood and not feel nostalgic toward a good ol’ box of crayons? From the way they smell to the built-in sharpener that came with my 64 color-filled box, I have loved them all. Luckily, this season, it is completely on trend to dress like one. Who knew?

Monochromatic brights (pick a color, any color) are all the rage according to online reports, and it seems all the big designers are dabbling in the brights department. From sharply tailored pencil pants to dramatic knits, look for your favorite shade and don’t be afraid to don plenty of color for fall.

Here, we play with beautiful, blissful blues. Blair Koons of Fayetteville wears a vintage suede dress, linen bow as a belt and platform heels, all in glorious azure.

No. 2: Put A Lid On It

(Hats Add Drama For Fall)

No. 2: Put A Lid On It

Sadly, we no longer live in the day and age when ladies wore hats and gloves to take a trip to the grocery store.

No longer seen as an Easter Sunday type of monstrosity, hats worn purely as decoration are making a huge comeback. Most women look phenomenal in a stunning topper, and hats have an uncanny ability to pull almost any outfit together. Just see what a hat can do to jeans and a T-shirt: The hat becomes the focal point and can also hide a bad hair day.

Whatever your viewpoint on hats, try a couple on for size before you say “No, thanks.” It could be exactly what your wardrobe was missing.

Here, Julie Blood of Fayetteville wears a fabulous 1950s black velvet hat, encrusted with rhinestones. (Note she also sports a peplum-waisted jacket, as seen in No. 6, below.) Simply lovely!

No. 3: Raiding Your Boyfriend’s Closet

(A No-Brainer)

No. 3: Raiding Your Boyfriend's Closet

Every season, every year, someone somewhere talks of the importance of incorporating a little menswear into your feminine wardrobe.

Guys have it easy when it comes to dressing up or down, less muss and fuss, lots of clean lines and simple shapes for a more timeless, less trendy closet that can be maintained for years. Let’s take a cue from the fellas in our lives and steal a garment or two, eh?

Some of my favorites include The Boyfriend Blazer, The Boyfriend Sweater and any simple button-down shirts. Heck, I’ll even throw a necktie into the mix just to “masculine up” an overtly feminine ensemble. Remember, the key to not looking like a Marx Brother in drag is to MIX his things with your own, to avoid going head-to-toe dude.

Here, Blair mixes her menswear blazer with a feminine, waist-cinching belt and a bright green mid-length skirt (as in No. 1, above).

No. 4: The Jean Theory

(Get It Right)

No. 4: The Jean Theory

We all own and wear jeans. They are nothing less than a major staple for every season, every year, and come in an endless array of cuts and colors. They are never going out of style, and you can bet your sweet ass and your bottom dollar that last season’s jeans look exactly like this season’s jeans.

That being said, my theory on jeans is this: know your body type and go from there. Find the style of jean that most compliments your frame and buy them in multiples. Money is not an issue when you are investing in wardrobe staples that will last several years.

Some of us like skinny jeans, while others prefer boot cut, cropped, boyfriend slouchy … you get the idea. Any woman over the age of 18 has spent enough time in the mirror addressing her backside to know which jeans make her look the best. Don’t let current trends force your cute little tushie into questionable cuts. Ladies, go with your gut, and, always, always, always check out your butt!

Here, Julie wears her favorite curve-flattering jeans. Regardless of price, brand or style, she exudes confidence and wears what best fits her body type and her sense of style.

No. 5: Embracing Mustards

(On Trend)

No. 5: Embracing Mustards

Like it or not, mustard is all over the runways for fall 2011. I have never really owned anything in mustard and have fancied myself more of a “ketchup-kind-of-gal.” Being a fair-skinned blonde, the thought of head-to-toe yellow scares me a little.

That being said, use your mustard sparingly. Accessories in shades of the pucker-worthy condiment will lend just the right amount of spice to your outfit if you don’t think the hue will compliment your coloring. Trying something new is part of the fun of fashion. Some are a hit, and some are a miss but it’s always fun to try something different.

Here, we like our mustard spicy-printed and cropped pants paired with an equally sassy burnt-yellow leather satchel. Mmmm, mustardy!

No. 6: Peplum Jackets

(In-The-Know)

No. 6: Peplum Jackets

Once a hit in the 1940s with women-in-the-know, peplum jackets and tops have been making a big comeback during the past several years, and fall 2011 is no stranger to the skirted waist.

One of the hippest ways to show off a whittled waistline, these jackets look fabulous alone or when paired with an equally stunning belt. What’s so wonderful about the peplum? It flatters figures from petite to buxom, allowing women of all shapes and sizes to play up our two most important assets: our waist and our bust. Peplum waists create the illusion of a smaller waist and a larger bust, and what woman can say no to a proposition like that?

Here, a vintage 1960s peplum-waist jacket, complete with crocodile skin inlay, gives Julie just what she needs for optimum OOMPH. Looking good, curvy lady! And, no belt required.

No. 7: Denim On Denim

(Another No-Brainer)

No. 7: Denim on Denim

Known to some as a “Canadian tuxedo,” the prospect of denim on denim seems a little scary to a handful of folks. Well, fear not, Fayetteville, because this season it is all the rage to mix and match your denims.

No longer a frowned upon combination, wearing multiple denims at once can be conquered. The key is to appear nonchalant, a bit happenstance and like you just threw it on and couldn’t care less. With contrasting shades of blue, this no-brainer combo could just become your new favorite go-to outfit.

Avoid looking like a 50-something biker chick by keeping cuts current (i.e.: no “mom” jeans with pleats and PLEASE don’t tuck your shirt into your pants.)

Here, Blair’s disheveled hair and lackadaisical demeanor give the all-denim look just the vibe it needs. Add a tough pair of Harley Davidson boots, and she is ready to go.

No. 8: Statement Jewels

(Going Bold)

No. 8: Statement Jewels

While it is fun to pile on the jewelry, a couple necklaces here, a wrist full of bracelets there, sometimes we tend to go overboard on the accessories.

One major trend this fall is bold, singular statement jewelry. Statement meaning it can and should stand alone. It needs no back-up singers because a statement piece is Tina Turner AND Kate Middleton all rolled in to one.

Less is more when it comes to your jewels and, really, I am quite thankful. Although I rather enjoy my massive jewelry collection, I would much prefer sticking to one show-stopping piece to compliment my outfit. There is nothing quite as special as donning that one eye-catching showpiece that becomes the star of your outfit, garnering praise all evening, wherever you may venture.

Here, Blair lets her jewelry take the lead. The outfit, a simple, ribbed men’s tank top and stunning maxi skirt (see No. 10, below), takes a back seat to the enormous and beguiling leather fringe necklace. Statement made, eh?

No. 9: Dramatic Outerwear

(Yet another no-brainer)

No. 9: Dramatic Outerwear

Luckily, our fall and winter seasons in Northwest Arkansas aren’t so intense that we all must dress specifically for gale force wind and blinding, blistering snowstorms. And, while fur-trimmed parkas have a special place in my heart, they aren’t necessarily commanding any attention in the fashion arena.

For me, this season is all about the drama when it comes to outerwear. Go for bright colors, luxurious fabrics and interesting cuts when choosing coats and jackets to properly enhance your wardrobe. Remember, your outerwear is the first thing people see in the colder months, and sometimes we never get the opportunity to remove our coats to display our well-planned outfits that lie beneath. Make sure you are noticed regardless by making your warmest layer also the coolest layer.

Here, Blair sports a phenomenal eggplant-colored, wool, military overcoat. With ornate gold buttons and a hemline that skims the floor, this lady has created enough drama for 10 people.

No. 10: Maxi Skirts

(On trend)

No. 10: Maxi Skirts

Last but certainly not least, let’s take a gander at the flowing, flattering and very much in-style maxi skirt.

All the rage for fall 2011, some designers are pairing their larger-than-life skirts with chunky knit sweaters, while others are keeping it a little more streamlined. Equally versatile as the mini, the maxi does a better job at keeping you modest as well as allowing women of almost any age a chance to take on the trend. However you choose to wear your maxi skirt, try not to overload yourself with too many accessories (scarves, belts, etc.) as they tend to drag this look down. Keep it simple, and you can’t go wrong.

Here, Julie wears a red, silk maxi skirt paired with a cropped sweater in a black-white stripe. The bow on the sweater is the only the accessory she needs to keep her look clean, easy and breezy.

1. Janette Balleza
Miss Janette of Fayetteville, owner and founder of Scribe Marketing, is rocking a daring dress-over-jeans combo that I simply adore. There is nothing sweeter than a flirty, sheer summer white over a pair of sturdy, outfit-anchoring denim. She keeps it seasonal by adding flat, strappy gladiator sandals and a lightweight scarf. Like a breath of fresh air, this small business owner knows how to mix it up to stay comfy AND sport business casual chic.

Lindsey Chacon

Lindsey of Bluebird Photography, located near the Town Center in Fayetteville, plays up her petite frame with ballerina-inspired accessories. With shades of blush pink mixed with shades of black and gray, she keeps her look playful and fun with legwarmers and a thigh-skimming skirt. Oh, how I love a dancer, and even if you aren’t Broadway bound anytime soon, take a cue from this savvy gal and try evoking a chorus member or two from “A Chorus Line.” This look is almost too fun not to try.

Shelby may only be 19, but this University of Arkansas student knows how to pull an outfit together. Grays and blacks make up the majority of her ensemble, but my favorite part is how she is not afraid to throw some brown into the mix. Although some folks don’t dare, there is absolutely no harm in mixing blacks and browns when done correctly. Just look how her simple, oversized bag pops against her blank palette ensemble. Textured tights pull her look together nicely, while adding depth and keeping her modest. You go, Shelby!

4. Chadwick Woodard
Chadwick, 21, is not the ONLY man I have seen recently worth style snapping with my lens, but, he is one of the coolest cats I have come across in a while. A man of few words, this quirky student keeps his simple outfit on the edge with little tweeks here and there, such as tight rolling his jeans and sporting no socks. Chadwick pairs a vintage, pale yellow shirt with skinny jeans for a day of errands with his girlfriend (see Shelby J.) and tops it all off with a fabulous pair of black, square-framed specs. Easy, breezy and all sweatshop-free, just like this guy likes it.

Lauren Leach

5. Lauren Leach
Lauren of Fayetteville shows off her style instincts by letting a vintage fedora take the lead. A showstopper topper for men and women alike, fedoras are hot (as in cool) all year around. Here, Lauren pairs a plain, black tank with destroyed vintage 1970s Levis, ridden with hole after glorious hole, (real distressing that can only be found when a piece has been loved and worn for years on end). A recycled leather necklace and large bangle complete the look, and with a go-to jeans and tank combo, Miss Leach looks like a million bucks.

Shayla, a true free spirit, is often inspired by her overactive bouts of creativity and her wild sense of style comes alive in her funky ensembles. Mixing prints has become quite the trend, and one that is worth trying. Who knows? You may end up looking as cutting edge and fashion forward as the spunky Ms. Turner!

I also know one lady (well, most of the time, anyway) who, although a zealous fashion hound and exhibitionistic clotheshorse, owns but two measly pair. Of course, they are fabulous, irreplaceable, vintage Levi bellbottoms, but only two pair?
Come on now, Emily. Get with the program.

In hopes of finding a way out of this dreaded denim slump, I sought counsel from some of my favorite fresh-faced, local gal pals who know how to do denim right! And now that I have officially outed myself as someone in need of a little “jeans intervention,” hopefully my friends and I can also help a reader or two ease their way into some new denim styles.

It’s spring time (finally!) and surprise, surprise, Mother Nature still has Fayetteville’s finest covering up to bear the chill brought in March. A bit too premature to shed the outerwear just yet, I have been seeing jackets, scarves and boots left and right.
But fear not, if it’s true what they say about April showers bringing May flowers, our coats should be taking their place in the back of hall closets soon enough. Until then, take a few early spring tips from these stylishly warm locals.

1. Erin King and Kurt Currie, Fayetteville

This perfectly cute and quirky couple make a habit of looking fashionably in-sync without even trying. Freshly engaged with grandma’s vintage ring filled with new emeralds and a May date set for an evening Uncle Gaylord’s affair, Erin and Kurt, both in their mid-20s, are going low-key and eclectic. Picture mason jars filled with candles and lots of vintage touches, even Erin’s wedding dress!

2. Adam Cox, Fayetteville

2. Adam Cox, Fayetteville

As hard as it is not to cover up an amazing embroidered western shirt, Adam Cox, 26, knows to carry along a distressed leather jacket just in case the weather changes. Mr. Cox, a guitarist and vocalist with an appetite for skinny, dark jeans and pearl snaps, is the front man for local group Cletus Got Shot. And, just in case you can’t tell by Adam’s nifty ensemble, the band ALSO rocks pretty friggin’ hard.

3. Amelia Tedder, Fayetteville

Amelia, 33, is a nurse with oodles and oodles of fashion know-how. Never to be seen in an unflattering pair of white, orthopedic nurses shoes, Amelia instead turns to easy separates in deep hues paired with her precious-pixie, no-fuss haircut.

3. Amelia Tedder, Fayetteville

An outdoorsy kind of lady, this proud momma of two beautiful blondes also radiates a blissful, hippie vibe with her natural beauty and knack for looking utterly carefree this spring. I will be eager to see what Miss Tedder wears as summer nears; I am envisioning long, flowing skirts and flowers in her hair … simply lovely.

4. David Bingaman, Fayetteville

Being a busy student with two wheels doesn’t leave much time to concern yourself with fashion, especially if you’re a 22-year-old without a care in the world. Luckily for UA student David Bingaman, pulling together an awesome spring outfit is as easy as throwing on your Member’s Only jacket. Check. Graphic T-shirt. Check. Beat-up jeans. Check. Wicked kicks. Check. Now, try coordinating that outfit to your super sweet, turquoise and yellow, 1980s-vintage 10-speed bicycle. Go ahead, Fayetteville, I dare you.

12 tips to keep cool while the weather warms up

Story and photos by Emily V. Smith

Funky Chunky Knits with Jacqueline Manhattan

No. 1 — Funky Chunky Knits

Hot off the presses: For spring 2011, chunky knits abound!

Yes, chunky knits are usually reserved for the winter months, but spring IS all about the act of transition, and often, in early spring, heavier pieces are necessary. Look for ones with short sleeves and/or a cropped hemline.

Personally, I love them. And if I wasn’t already pushing 6 feet and sporting a somewhat athletic build, I’d wear them everyday. Alas, I shall pass, but you, young (or not so young) fashion vixen, please give ’em a chance! They are beyond fabulous when paired with tailored high-waisted shorts and some lace-up granny boots. Make sure you don’t look like a linebacker by keeping a little skin showing … it IS spring, after all.

TIP: My favorite part of this outfit is the CASHMERE LEG WARMERS. I made them by simply cutting off sweater sleeves that I didn’t use anymore. They are lightweight and versatile … heck, you could even wear them as arm warmers. All it takes is a pair of scissors, so Mommas, make a pair for your little girls too!

* Esque stripe shorts from Maude Boutique. Hand-knit vintage chunky top and cashmere leg warmers from Potter’s House Thrift.

No. 2 — Accessories Worth Collecting: Old Watches

As a longtime and avid thrifter, I have amassed quite the collection of old, gaudy, vintage, plastic, gold, dainty, chunky, old man style, wonderfully unique watches … some of them work, some don’t. Eh, some WOULD work if I ever thought to put a battery in them … but I digress.

Either way, as an actual functioning timepiece or just as good-looking wrist bling, second-hand watches (especially when worn in multiples) look pretty stinkin’ hot. Try mixing them with a gold chain-link bracelet or two … maybe a leather cuff.

Multiple-Use Alert with Shayla Turner

No. 3 — Multiple-Use Alert

Silk tops have been on the scene for decades now. Halston did them in the ’70s, shoulder pads found a home beneath “power” silks in the ’80s, I wore my fair share of them tucked into tight-rolled jeans in the ’90s, and now, as I realize how (insert explicative here) old I am getting, my keen fashion sense tells Momma that those vintage silks can be revamped, remade and shine like a new penny. Praise ye, sweet, sweet silkworm.

I have seen numerous simple silk minidresses in the magazines for spring ’11 (including my favorite magazine, Lucky) that are no more than an oversized button-down shirt. If you can believe it, the particular dress that caught my eye and prompted this segment was $725 dollars! No thanks.

It is an easy look to pull off. Admittedly a major thoroughbred clotheshorse, I shop several days a week. If I had a store and could stock it with amazing, oversized silk tops (to be worn as dresses), I could have done it a million times over by now. Lots of stunning silks are out there; all you have to do is look. This hot pink number set me back a whopping $2 at Salvation Army. Looks like I saved myself about $700. Nice.

No. 4 — Lovely Lady In Lace

Turn on your computer and type in “top fashion trends for Spring 2011” and you will likely find lace at the top of the leaderboard.

I love lace. Lace is ladylike. Lace is provocative. Lace can be innocent and girlie or raunchy and dark all at once. For the most part, lace works within the context of your outfit and serves as the catalyst that sparks the initial fire. Envision a Doris-Day-meets-Stevie-Nicks type of ensemble. Va-va-voom!

As a child of the ’80s, I most often link my love of lace to Madonna circa 1984. It was then I learned the significance of the lone glove look. Well, if you dare to venture from the likes of a simple glove and turn up the drama a few trillion notches, take a few pointers from my version for spring 2011.

TIP: Maxiskirts (floor length and sweeping) are fabulous this spring and look so floaty in lace. Try an amped up navy dress with neon yellow opaque tights underneath. The granny boots and cashmere T-shirt keep it simple to frame the show-stopper neck piece that is like the cherry on top of the outfit. In your face lace with a dramatic slap of the wrist. *Zing!* Momma likes it lacy.
* Satchel and lace dress from Cheap Thrills. Granny boots from Goodwill. Cashmere T-shirt from Prairie Grove Thrift. Rhinestone necklace from Mae’s Emporium.

No. 5 — A Devil’s Icebox Kind Of Evening

First off, let me say I look forward to the warm days of spring like no other.

Over and over throughout my life, I have often busted out my shorts WAY too early in anticipation of balmy, 70 degree temperatures. I seem to follow the same pattern come every springtime, only to be bitten (literally) in the buttocks by the bitter chill of winter that still lingers in the night air.

Stop regretting your less-is-more philosophy when it comes to your spring attire. It is OK to keep your winter staples out of storage for a little longer as we wait for spring to fully arrive. It is a good idea to stay warm, regardless, since nothing is less fashionable than a hacking cough and a snotty nose. Hack. Hack.

Besides, there is something to be said for the handsome combination of a thickly knit wool fisherman’s sweater with a metallic pair of shorts. It is an unlikely pairing that is what spring is all about — refreshing and different. Ahhhh … breathe in the spring, folks.

* Esque gold short shorts from Maude Boutique. Vintage hat from Cheap Thrills. Espadrilles from Goodwill. Vintage wool sweater from Potter’s House Thrift.

No. 6 — One For The Fellas

One for the Fellas with Anthony Hopson

OK , so I am a female, as you have probably guessed by now, and as much as I like to think that I know most everything, I am, unfortunately, unable to provide with you fashionable male readers with an equally thorough approach to your spring 2011 wardrobe as I have so graciously offered the women. All I can really say is “Sorry.”

What I can do, if nothing else, is provide you a worthy example of what one stylish local man is sporting for spring. Enter Anthony.

I met Anthony out and about in Fayetteville recently. His style was so unique that I asked to snap a couple of shots and the rest is history. Take a clue from Tony here and create a style that is unique to you.

Men, fashion is easy, but it can be made even easier if you enlist a fashionable female (or male) friend to offer a push in the right direction. Truth be told, I simply *adore* being asked by male friends to help dress them. I can put an outfit together at the shake of a stick, and if I can offer my services to a compadre in need, I am happy to do so.

TIP: Try Anthony’s casual Friday look by wearing your tie a little loosened with your sleeves effortlessly rolled up a bit. Who cares? Not you. It’s Friday, and you are looking good.

No. 7 — In Yo’ Face, Punk

If you can still stand it, and punk isn’t something that makes you wanna puke, it is “in” yet again for spring 2011.
Sid and Nancy eat your heart out.

As I say with many things so overtly in your face, a little goes a long way in the punk department. And yet, somewhere along the way, I found myself pleasantly immersed in a plethora of leather. In fact, I made an entire outfit out of it without making my model look like the biker from The Village People. I found patents, supple suedes, soft, buttery leathers, even this 1980s tie-dyed, dolman-sleeved number, pictured here, that I scored at downtown Fayetteville’s legendary Cheap Thrills. The shorts were cleverly made by cutting off some leather pants I found at The Attic in south Fayetteville.

TIP: For a unique new piece of convertible jewelry, hit up Hobby Lobby for their selection of leather cords. I found an amazing shade of turquoise blue leather that wraps as a necklace, bracelet, OR headband. The possibilities and the colors are endless.

No. 8 — What I’m Sprung On

I am a selfish gal, or so I have been told a time or two thousand. Momma wants what Momma wants, and right now, for spring 2011, Momma wants as many ankle boots as she can get her hands on. As versatile a wardrobe staple as any, the ankle boot is the chameleon that can be worn spring, fall and winter alike without worry of being out of season.

Next on my want list, a beat-up, broken-in, heavy-duty satchel. What better way to carry around your life, and your laptop, than in a durable, functional piece of leather?

TIP: Let your satchel double as your weekend bag if getting out of town or as a book bag for all you fashionable students attending the UA. It beats a run-of-the-mill backpack any day of the week!

* Vintage leather satchel from Cheap Thrills. Red suede boots from Goodwill.

No. 9 — Enormous Hats

It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway: All women look better in a wide-brimmed hat.

There is something nostalgic and alluring about the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” drama that a semi-obscured face evokes. On the plus side, it is an elegant, cheap, stylish and nontrendy way to protect your baby soft skin from the harsh, unforgiving sun. In fact, you might as well consider a hat, much like the one pictured here, a wardrobe staple for the duration of spring AND summer. Good skin is irreplaceable, and sun protection will never go out of fashion.

* Sun hat from Cheap Thrills, lilac chunky knit crop sweater from Potter’s House Thrift. Leather cord from Hobby Lobby.

No. 10 — Mixing Fall, Summer For Spring

Thankfully, the notion of one-season-only wear almost no longer exists in the world of fashion. Unless trying to incorporate a floor-length wool overcoat or some other overly heavy piece of outerwear, chances are you are safe in attempting an intermixing of your closet’s seasons. Many high-quality pieces transcend seasonal boundaries and mesh with other multiseasonal items to create unique pairings during the less predictable seasons of fall and spring.

Try it as we did here: a white gauzy dress from summer topped with a thin cropped sweater from fall. Add a substantial pair of ankle boots and you are ready for a rainy April afternoon dog walk. And, you are gonna look horribly fashionable doing it, might I add. Go on, scoop that poop, pretty lady.

TIP: For a fresh, spring look, while you are at Hobby Lobby buying leather, browse their floral section. Often, single stems are on sale, and they make *the best* hair accessories. I like the roses and hydrangeas best.

No. 11 — The Timeless Red Lip

All the pin-up girls and screen legends of decades past had it right. Nothing keeps ’em coming back for more quite like a pouty, red lip.

Universally flattering on ALL skin types, a flash of red lipstick is sometimes all it takes to elevate a regular outfit to another level. If you think red may not be for you, try something a little more subtle like coral, which is also an across-the-board flatterer. Food for thought: A red lip makes the teeth appear whiter. Yep, look it up. Then go get yourself some red lips quick.

No. 12 — Sheers

Another big trend for spring this year are sheer, peek-a-boo fabrics.

Don’t scare off just yet. As with the punk phenomenon, sheers are to be approached with a bit of caution. You must be a bold soul to pull off such a look, but it can be done as long as you keep the rest of the outfit classy. This silk dress has a sheer top half that gives the illusion of skin without showing too much. Add leather ankle boots, a gold chain rope choker and a massive hair bow and you are ready to ride atop a backseat as queen in the May Day Parade. Go on, wave to the crowd like you mean it. Wrist, wrist. Elbow, elbow.

TIP: Scarves of all varieties can be found at local thrift stores. Again, my collection of scarves is reaching embarrassing numbers, but, it is difficult not to indulge.

By Emily Smith

TFW Contributing Writer

Four fashion forward Fayetteville ladies use their own sense of whimsy to dress up one simple top.

Top: 1980s Vintage Polyester T-shirt from Potter’s House Thrift for only 50 cents. Yep, 50 freakin’ cents.

No. 1: Liz Forbach

No. 1: Liz Forbach

Liz is a tall drink of water who has a sleek, edgy style and is rarely seen without her super tall high heels. I like that Liz knows how to play up her long legs with dark jeans and lots of extra height.

With a handful of mismatched jewelry pieces from Cheap Thrills, she keeps it real by mixing plastic with semi-precious. The fringed silk scarf adds mucho, mucho drama. Mad props. Emily thinks Liz is cool.

No. 2: Lauren Leach

Lauren is a quiet girl who emits a musician’s muse vibe and can rock a red lip like no other. A fellow avid thrifter and new mom to Stella, Miss Lauren is as tiny and petite as they come.

No. 2: Lauren Leach

She is my new fashion hero for scoring several pairs of these shredded skinny jeans off the sale rack at Walmart for $3 each. Miley Cyrus made too many apparently, and Lauren wasn’t asking any questions. Yeah for Lauren!

No. 3: Jacqueline Manhattan

OK, so her last name isn’t REALLY Manhattan, but I have known her for two years and I only recently thought to ask. This hot momma has a stage name. Sweet. And she goes by it. Double sweet.

Her sense of style is just that, sweet but full of sly and crazy and sexy and lazy all rolled into one tall, beautiful ball. Miss Jacqi chose super short vintage denim cutoffs with a big floppy hat.

No. 3: Jacqueline Manhattan

Ahhh … makes me want to take a trip to the West Coast.

No. 4: Yours Truly, The Divine Miss Em

So, this being my virgin run for the Free Weekly with this particular column, I had to sneak one in there. I only cropped my head so you could envision your head atop my body, much like a paper doll. (Go ahead, it helps me when I am putting outfits together!)

My style is all over the board, frankly. I like to dabble in a little bit of everything. Unfortunately, I only get to play dress up on Mondays now, since having a baby last summer, I only work one day a week.

No. 4: Emily Smith

Seldom do I have too many rules when it comes to fashion these days … this coming from a woman who mostly wears sweatpants and a T-shirt sans bra. There, I said it. Geez Louise. Thank goodness for Mondays and good fashion.

Hope the ideas come flowing your way after taking a look at what 50 cents can look like. And hope you are looking forward to our next installment! You are lookin’ fine, Fayetteville.
